DAY 62: Volunteered for Help Portrait.
Help Portrait is an annual event that takes place around the world. This year’s event was held on December 8, 2012. In Edmonton, it was held at two locations (Old Strathcona and downtown). I heard about this event from a friend of mine who coordinated the Help Portrait event at the downtown location.
So what is it? Well, I think this blurb from the Help Portrait site describes it best:
"In December, photographers around the world will be grabbing their cameras, finding people in need and taking their picture. When the prints are ready, the photographs get delivered.
Yep. It really is that easy.
This is about GIVING the pictures, not taking them. These portraits are not for your portfolio, website, or for sale. Money isn’t involved here. This holiday season, you have the chance to give a family something they may have never had before—a portrait together.”
It was really great to see people come together like this. I think it’s why I love volunteering for events like Help Portrait. Before we started, the organizer said this (paraphrased): “Just remember, in this room we are all equal. We want Help Portrait to be a place where everyone can just forget everything going on in this world, and just be happy. In this room, we are all equal”.
I just wish that it could be like this any day and anywhere.
I’m really glad I was able to be a part of the event. As a general volunteer, I met tons of amazing people and even got the chance to get my own portrait taken!
